It's the thought that counts

Charity is a virtue that we try our best to incorporate into our family life and everyday conversation.  Sometimes, however, the sentiment is lost in the practicality. . .

#2:  I know we're supposed to be helping the poor people in Honduras, but I think it is important to also help the people in the war.

#3:  Like the guys fighting in the war?

#2:  Yes, like maybe we should give them some food, if they don't have enough.

#3:  Like apples, maybe? (it is probably no coincidence that last week was Johnny Appleseed week at school).  They could cut the apples with their sharp swords!  (please see this post for a better idea of this child's ongoing misperception of war)

#2:  Yeah, maybe. . .

#3:  Oh, wait!  (the wheels are turning. . .) That won't work because we couldn't get into the war to give them the apples.  (deeper insight surfacing. . .)  One bad thing is that we'd have to get into the gate to get into the war and you might only have a little time to be in the war, if you go into the army. (processing, problem solving. . .) We could send them seeds to grow the apples!  (the piece de resistance. . .) , I'm sure that there's a problem there, too, because they wouldn't have enough time to grow the apples!
